SCAR TALK (semi T.M.I.)

July 1, 2010 · Posted in random blog

I have a lot of scars – both minor and keloid. Most of which are (thankfully) hidden while some I (unfortunately) mysteriously acquired recently. Why they decided to manifest, I don’t know.

I just know that:
a) I don’t like them (specifically the recent keloids) and b) I DON’T LIKE THEM.

I don’t mind the 14 inch scar running down my spine from surgery. I also don’t mind the accompanying 4 inch scar from a bone graft.

I tried hiding a keloid with a tattoo but this keloid just got bigger and bigger. Now it has 4 siblings.
There’s no absolute cure out there yet… but there are ways to minimize its appearance. One is to have regular injections to help flatten the keloid. Yup, been there, done that – and you have to keep on having these done coz after a while, the darn things pop up again like jello.

When I was a kid, I remember wanting to have a scar on my cheek – I don’t know why but that was me being a kid and not knowing the reason behind some of my whims. I’d try rubbing my cheek against the corner of a desk. Thank goodness that didn’t do anything, except make my cheek red and sore.

One time last year (or maybe even late ’08), I was at a Coffee Bean in Santa Monica when an old man approached me and asked about the only visible keloid (at that time) by my tattoo.
Jolly Old Man: Excuse me, I hope you don’t mind my asking but what is this? (pointing to the keloid)
Me: a keloid
JOM: what’s that?
Me: it’s a scar from some wound
(JOM looked more confused)
Me: it just happens, I don’t even know where that came from but I guess it was from a small wound
JOM: (looking kind of sorry) Oh, ok. (as he was starting to leave, he turned to me) Thanks. Bye, keloid!

A jolly old man just called me keloid. HAHAHA!

Well, it’s a good thing I’m one of those who aren’t super sensitive, don’t get offended easily and don’t take things too personally. He was just a jolly old curious man, I guess who didn’t have a clue about such things. And he asked nicely too.
